Product Quality Control
The quality control of ArcelorMittal Tubarão products (slabs and coils) is guaranteed by the production process monitoring systems and the quality inspections carried out throughout the several stages of the production chain.
The monitoring systems comprise several specific equipment and software, which continuously monitor each stage of the production process. As a result, it is possible to know all the events which may compromise the final quality of slabs and coils allowing for preventive and corrective measures on detected deviations.
Chemical analyses are performed on the steel in each stage of the production process in order to ensure that the composition is in compliance with client specifications.
In the production of slabs, the inspection includes sampling the products at the end of the continuous casting process to assess internal quality and investigate possible cracks. Final product quality control is guaranteed by the inspection of all slabs regarding: shape, size, surface defects, and internal quality through sonogram testing.
In the HSM production process the strips are inspected on both sides through the online Parsytec system. There is also the offline inspection at the end of the coilers where the strip is uncoiled and checked by the inspector who gives their expert's opinion on the rolling mill performance. On the finishing lines, the coils are divided and inspected regarding, surface quality, size and shape. In this stage of the process the samples are drawn and sent to the Mechanical Testing Laboratory which performs tests to assess compliance with specific mechanical properties according to the application requirements of each clients based on current regulations.

Besides its logistics advantages, ArcelorMittal Tubarão location made it possible to incorporate in its design a modern and efficient sea water system for equipment cooling purposes.
After being used without no direct contact with any equipment the sea water is returned to the ocean with no change to its initial characteristics.
ArcelorMittal Tubarão is an integrated steel production plant, which means that the unit carries out all the steps of the steel production process: coke, sinter and pig iron production, hot metal production, slab casting and rolling.
The plant also produces all the electric power needed in the production in thermo electrical stations using the steam and gases from its production processes.
